Integrative Medicine Doctor
Qualifications, Memberships and Experience
Dr Jonathan Bigwood is an experienced doctor with a background in a variety of specialities and general practice. Dr Bigwood has holistic philosophy in treating his patients and in recent years, he has developed a strong focus on functional and nutritional medicine, which recognises that health problems are often complex and requires detailed investigation of the underlying causes.
Originally from the UK, Dr Bigwood completed his medical degree at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London. He worked in a variety of specialities in his early medical career including gastroenterology, endocrinology, psychiatry and surgery. He undertook his General Practice training in Brighton, UK, gaining further experience in areas including emergency medicine, obstetrics and ENT surgery, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK in 2017. He moved with his family to Perth in 2018 and was granted Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) in Australia.
His interest has always been in supporting patients with long term health conditions, working with them to address all aspects of their health and wellbeing. Throughout his training, he has continued to develop his knowledge and is currently undertaking speciality training with the Australia College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM).
He has worked as a GP in Perth since 2018 and has developed a strong understanding of the Australian medical system. Although Dr Bigwood has fellowship with RACGP, he practices as an Integrative Medicine Doctor at Remede which means that while patients cannot receive a Medicare rebate for their consultations, they can be referred for testing and specialist referral through Medicare. Dr Bigwood’s consultations are much longer than standard GP consultations, allowing him to take the time to be exceptionally thorough to listen to his patient’s issues and then fully investigate & treat the underlying cause of their health concerns.
Areas of specialty and approach to treatment
Dr Bigwood has a broad and extensive knowledge of medicine, however he understands the limitations of conventional approaches, particularly for patients with long-term and chronic health problems. He believes that health can be restored by improving the function of all the body’s systems, rather than hoping that a single medication will treat a complex condition.
He has experience in treating patients of all ages with a variety of concerns such as chronic pain, heart conditions, diabetes and metabolic disorders, weight gain, fatigue, digestive issues, immune problems, hormonal concerns, depression and anxiety. He focuses on lifestyle strategies to assist recovery including diet, exercise, sleep and stress management. He understands the importance of a team approach to supporting patients and will involve other health professionals whenever necessary.
He has a particular interest in men’s health and recognises the barriers that men often feel in bringing their health concerns forward. He is experienced in investigating and treating weight problems, mental health concerns and sexual dysfunction in men.
His interest in seeking answers beyond conventional medicine led him to undertake further training in prescribing medical cannabis. He has experience in treating a variety of health concerns such as chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia with medical cannabis and has seen benefits for many patients, particularly when conventional treatments have been ineffective or have undesired side-effects.
As well as patients with specific health concerns, he enjoys supporting patients who are looking to optimise their health, to live as long and healthy a life as possible. This includes a thorough assessment of current health status, lifestyle, potential genetic risks and in-depth investigations as required. He can then work with patients to reduce their risks through a combination of evidence-based nutritional+lifestyle measures.
Dr Bigwood’s focus on addressing the underlying causes of ill health means that his consultations are comprehensive, detailed and patient-specific. He takes an extensive history and then carries out physical examinations and testing as required, which may include standard medical tests as well as functional and nutritional tests. Once this comprehensive assessment has been completed and the underlying contributors to a patient’s health problems have been identified, Dr Bigwood will develop a stepwise approach to restoring health. This usually starts with nutritional and lifestyle therapy as the foundation, including supplements, and then natural and conventional medicines if required.
Dr Bigwood’s holistic approach to patient care, compassionate nature and extensive experience makes him a valued member of the Remède practitioner team.
