what is chiropractic

Chiropractic is a natural, drug-free, hands-on manual therapy that works on restoring your body’s natural movement and alignment. Chiropractic is a gentle process that works with, and not against, the body and focuses on the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. It is widely recognised as one of the most safe and effective manipulative therapies available. Chiropractors use gentle manipulation techniques and functional treatment to assist patients to achieve normal pain free movement and function by correcting underlying dysfunction. When the body is free of restrictions in movement, it is better able to cope with pain, stress and disease, which improves the body’s natural potential to heal itself.

chiropractic qualifications

Chiropractic is a highly-skilled profession, requiring a minimum of 5-years university study to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. The thorough training that Chiropractors receive enables them to use scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology to professionally examine, diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurological and health issues. Chiropractors are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide lifestyle advice to support a patient’s overall treatment.

what a chiropractic consultation involves

At Remède, your initial consultation will be a long appointment, to enable your chiropractor can take a full history and perform a thorough examination of your presenting problems. After the initial assessment has taken place, your chiropractor will discuss her findings and if you require further investigations or if you are ready to progress to treatment on the same day.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by a chiropractor is known as spinal manipulation, also called “chiropractic adjustment”. The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a gentle and controlled force to joints that have become hypomobile or restricted in their movement as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a number of circumstances – such as an acute traumatic event, a sudden movement in the wrong direction or improper lifting of a heavy object; or through repetitive chronic stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In both acute and chronic situations, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain and reduced function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, reduces pain and muscle tightness and allows the tissues to heal.

In addition to thorough clinical examination, our Chiropractor may refer a patient for diagnostic testing if required, such as diagnostic imaging (X-Ray, MRI, Ultrasound), laboratory testing and other diagnostic interventions to determine the best course of treatment. Our Chiropractor will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient’s condition, or when the condition requires a team-based approach to improve optimal outcomes – including referral to practitioners within and outside of our practice.
