acupuncture for fertility and IVF
Chinese medicine has a long history of improving fertility. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help to improve ovulation problems, improve the quality of the egg in the woman and help to overcome any cycle issues and any underlying imbalances that may be preventing successful pregnancy from occurring. Male sperm health can also be increased, and research shows that acupuncture is especially effective in enhancing sperm quality, particularly the morphology (normal forms), motility and DNA parameters.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is now being used to support modern medicine, with clinical trials showing that acupuncture can increase the success of assisted reproductive techniques such as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).
Chinese medicine during IVF therapy can help to ease the side-effects of the drug-therapies required for IVF treatment, as well as reduce stress and calm anxiety, improve egg quality and promote blood flow to the uterus to improve implantation. All of these effects encourage the body to accept the pregnancy.

acupuncture for pregnancy, birth and post-natal care
Acupuncture also has a long history in supporting a healthy pregnancy, which is now supported by research.
Acupuncture is safe and effective at keeping both the mother and baby healthy and well during the pregnancy and can improve the wellbeing of both after delivery. The focus of treatment changes during each trimester:
1st Trimester (0-12wks)
Weekly acupuncture treatments are recommended to reduce the risk of miscarriage and ease morning sickness and fatigue by strengthening and promoting blood flow to the uterus.
2nd Trimester (13-28wks)
At this stage when the pregnancy is strong and stable, treatments are scheduled once a month. The aim is to address any ailments such as heartburn, muscular pain, anxiety and sleep disturbances.
3rd Trimester (28-40wks)
The focus at this stage is to reduce the risk of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and oedema (swelling of legs and other fluid issues). Weekly treatments are recommended from 36 weeks onwards to prepare the body for birth and to improve the chances of having a healthy and problem-free delivery. Your acupuncturist may discuss effective acupressure points (points that you or your support-person can massage) during delivery, to assist the labour process, encourage healthy progression of labour and help to manage pain.
Weeks 34-36 is the ideal time to address breech babies. Acupuncture has been shown to helpful to assist in turning a malpositioned baby into the correct birthing position, often together with other strategies such as chiropractic treatment and/or obstetric care.
Birth
Your practitioner can help you to prepare for a healthy birth. In addition to other strategies, acupressure points to use during labour are discussed in a session with the expecting mother and her birth-partner, from 34 weeks onwards, as part of birthing preparation. Acupressure points are specific points that can be massaged during labour to assist the labour process, encourage healthy progression and help to manage pain.
Post Natal Care
Pregnancy places a huge demand both physically and mentally on the mother. Chinese medicine can provide support for a whole range of postnatal complaints including fatigue, mastitis, lack of milk production, abdominal cramping, constipation, uterine bleeding and emotional concerns such as post-natal depression. Chinese medicine can also be helpful for newborn problems such as colic, reflux, sleep issues, skin rashes and more…

Acupuncture Treatment (Sub-heading)
Acupuncture treatment usually involves the stimulation of specific points on your body, called acupoints, with acupuncture needles or massaging these points using acupressure.
Chinese medicine views the body from a holistic perspective with each individual having a life force, or Qi (pronounced “chee”), which circulates through the body in energy pathways called channels or meridians. According to TCM principles, all disease originates from blockages to this flow or when the Qi becomes weakened, blocked or imbalanced.
These Qi channels are linked to specific organ function and influence the balance and function of the entire body and regulate the nervous system, digestion, blood pressure and many other organ functions.
Acupuncture has the following specific functions:
- Initiating neurological (nerves), immunological (immune) and endocrine (hormone) responses
- Removing energy blockages in the body
- Reduces pain and inflammation
- Increases blood and nerve supply to tissues
- Increases natural endorphin (“feel-good” chemicals) levels
- Enhances mental clarity
- Reduces stress
- Relaxes the whole body
Acupuncturists insert very fine, sterile needles, into the body into carefully located acupuncture points that are situated along the meridian pathways. Acupuncture seeks to correct the imbalances in the body’s energy channels and encourages the body to heal itself. It does this by correcting the flow of Qi and helping to release natural chemicals stimulate the body’s natural healing response and balance the body back to optimal function and wellness. As the needles are so fine and because it is very different from other medical needles, the sensation is very subtle, which is why so many patients are often amazed at how different acupuncture is from other needles, and most find it very relaxing.
Chinese herbal medicine, dietary therapy, cupping and other treatments may be used alone or in addition to acupuncture.
Acupuncture is effective in treating and managing musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, digestive, immune, respiratory, gynaecological, urological and emotional disorders.
